What we hear in lo-fi
Tape hiss and an uneven tone are only the beginning. What matters is how they sit alongside the melody.
In lo-fi hip-hop, texture often becomes part of the arrangement: hiss, brief clicks, changes in pitch and softened drum sounds. The description of Comakid's Ableton pack places these qualities alongside loose rhythms and sounds from the world around us. This palette offers a way into the aesthetic, rather than a compulsory recipe for every track.
Start with one layer. Notice whether the rustle stays the same throughout the track or changes with the music. Then turn to the keys: do they sound close and dry, or do they trail off into a long echo? Even with a short, repeating motif, the background can create a sense of depth and movement.
Try imagining the same melody with a sharp, clean drum sound. The mood would change, even though the notes stayed the same. That is why listening to lo-fi through its tone can be as rewarding as following a recognisable motif. If the noise gets in the way, choose a clearer chillhop station: gentle music does not have to sound like an old cassette.
