A conversation between keys and bass
Listen to chillhop through two voices: a short phrase above and a line that supports it below.
A piano or electric keyboard part may take up very little space in chillhop: a few chords, a short run or a single repeating reply. That is enough for attentive listening. Pick the note that stands out most and follow it. Does it return at the same point each time, or does its role gradually change?
The bass does not have to follow the keys. It might hold one anchor note while the upper voice changes, or join neighbouring phrases with a small transition. Listen to the bass on its own first, then bring your attention back to the whole recording. Often this lower voice explains why a familiar passage feels different the second time around.
The label jazzhop suggests a direction to explore, but it does not promise a particular set of instruments or level of harmonic complexity. It is more useful to remember a specific detail you liked: a clear piano, a rounded bass or a light guitar part. These clues make it easier to choose neighbouring stations and find recordings you want to hear in full.
